During the first part of a long dance (chuu-no-mai),
the shite performs with his spread-tip fan (chuukei) closed. It
is opened after the introductory segment of the dance, as in the photo above.
In the photo below, the ghost of Atsumori uses his open fan to emphasize
looking out to sea at the departing ships.
