NorthWestward Ho!:

Hank and Barbara
(finally) visit
Mendocino County

17-19 September 2005

Saturday, September 17

We backtracked a few miles to the point where Rte 1 (the "Shoreline" Hwy) meets the 101 (the Redwood Hwy). We headed south on Rte 1 toward Pt Arena. Fortunately, the sun was mostly out making the views along the coast especially stunning.

Near the town of Cleone, we stopped for a short hike to the Seal Rocks off Laguna Point in MacKerricher State Park.

The Seal Point Trail...

...where intrepid sealwatching people could observe...

...equally curious peoplewatching seals...

...bobbing in the water just a few yards off shore.

Next stop was the town of Mendocino where we had lunch at the busy Mendocino Bakery.

Misty Mendocino on the cliffs.

After lunch, we explored the nearby headlands.

"You want me to back up a little more?"

A "punch bowl," where foamy sea water continuously rushes in and out through a cavernous passageway...

...that waves have carved into the cliff base--like this one.

Before heading to Pt Arena, we backtracked a few miles up Hwy 1 to Russian Gulch State Park to explore the stunningly beautiful Headlands Trail...

...which required some investigation to find, but once we did, we were glad we had made the effort:

Finally, we set off for Pt Arena and our weekend destination: the Coast Guard House B&B...
...where we were joined by...

Darci and Commodore Aaron!!

Before dinner, the four of us walked down the hill to the wharf...

...where the setting sun made the ocean shine...

...the cliffs glow...

...and our hearts sing!

After dinner, we sat by the fire and played Carcasonne.

Sunday, September 18

We started the day with a glorious hike in the Stornetta Public Lands recently acquired by Darci's employer, the Nature Conservancy! The area opened to the public in May 2005 under the auspices of the Bureau of Land Management!

Barb and Darci cross one of many rocky promontories in the headlands.

Wind and water sculpt the shoreline.

Aaron and Darci walk along a cliff's edge...

...while Barb finds a comfy spot on the rocks below...

...just above a sloshy secret sea cave.

Darci and Aaron discover a dramatic "punch bowl"...

...which seems the perfect place for a rustic hideaway.

A little farther on, we reached a small stream...

...which Aaron and Darci nonchalantly crossed...

...while we old fogies...

...held our collective breath!

Yikes!

Unfortunately, Darci and Aaron had to head back home in the afternoon, so we were on our own for dinner. Since Pangea was closed for the weekend, we decided to try the Redwood Grill in Anchor Bay. On the way, we stopped for a short hike to an overlook where we hoped to catch a glimpse of the famous Bowling Ball Beach...

Bowling Ball Beach.

Alas, the low tide was not low enough to expose the spherical rocks near the shore, but our dinner was spectacular!!

on to Big Sur ...
