Tenjin: The mask used to represent Sugawara no Michizane in Noh plays about him. The mask, which combines human and supernatural elements, represents Michizane's ambiguous position as a human being who first became a goryo and then was deified. Although much more human than the O-Tobide or O-Beshimi masks, the golden eyes indicate supernatural power and the flying eyebrows might allude to his role as god of thunder and lightening. In addition the mask has a faintly Chinese air, which may be a reflection of Michizane's fame as a scholar of Chinese literature.
