Fukai (grieving woman): an older woman (twenties or thirties) who is grieving for a lost child or lost love.

Below Left: In the play Izutsu (The Well Cradle), the ghost of Ki no Aritsune's daughter returns to the site of her childhood home where she first fell in love with her husband-to-be, Ariwara no Narihira. Note that when the Fukai mask is tilted downwards, as here, the expression becomes even sadder.

Below Right: The young woman from Hanjo (The Lady Han) who has gone crazy because she believes her lover has abandoned her, and is wandering from place to place looking for him. Note that having one shoulder of the outer robe taken off indicates madness in women, as does carrying a branch of sasaki.
