The Kane-iri (Bell-Entering) Scene: The woman, having lulled everyone to sleep with her hypnotic dance, seizes her chance to attack the huge bell which hangs suspended over the stage. Moving directly beneath it, she suddenly leaps up into the bell as it comes crashing to the ground. If done correctly, this dangerous leap gives the impression that the dancer has vanished right before our very eyes. In this photograph,the shite actor holds out his hands to judge where the bell is, just prior to leaping upward into the bell. Note that this actor has chosen a more subdued outer robe, indicating his interpretation that the serpent-woman is a widow in her twenties, rather than a girl of 14 or 15.

Chorus: Placing her hand on the dragon-head boss, she seems to fly upward into the bell.

She wraps the bell around her, she has disappeared.

(at the words, "placing her hand," the Dancer rests her hands on the under edge of the bell and then after a series of stamps, leaps up into it)
