With the bell hoisted, the play begins. Here the waki introduces himself as the head priest of Dojoji temple. He explains that although for years there has been no bell hanging in the temple belfry, today there will be a dedication ceremony for a new bell. For certain reasons known only to himself, no women are to be allowed into the temple compound during the ceremony.
