The shite (a shirabyoshi dancer) arrives from the province of Kii and requests permission to enter the temple grounds to perform a purification dance for the dedication ceremony. The temple-worker, desirous of seeing her dance, lets her convince him that since she is a dancer who performs wearing men's clothing, she is not an "ordinary" woman, and should therefore be allowed entrance.

Kyogen: Stop! You can't go into the courtyard. Women aren't allowed.

Shite: But I'm not like other women. I'm only a dancer. I live nearby and I am to perform at the dedication ceremony of the bell. Please let me see the ceremony.

Kyogen: A dancer? That's right, I suppose she doesn't count as an ordinary woman. Very well, I'll let you into the courtyard on my own, but in return you must dance for me.
