The shite, wearing a dancing cap, begins to perform the ranbyoshi (disordered rhythm) dance. Her slow circling, stamping dancehypnotizes the temple-workers, and may represent her stealthy climb upthe belfry tower steps so that she will be in a position to attack the bell. The stamps of the dance are carefully synchronized with the shoulder drum; note that the drummer shifts position slightly to get a better view of the dancer.
