The woman diver (ama) enters the stage, wearing a plain hemp "working" cloak (representing her humble status) and a Fukai (grieving mother) mask (see below). In her right hand she carries a sickle for cutting seaweed, and in her left hand she carries a bunch of cryptomeria fronds to evoke seaweed.
