Photograph from the play based on Kyôka's novel, Nihonbashi (Nihonbashi Bridge), first published in 1914. The story as summarized by Cody Poulton: "The story concerns a love triangele (or rather quadrangle) between Katsuragi Shinzô, a Tokyo University professor of medicine; two geishas, Kiyoha and Okô; and Okô's former lover, a fish merchant by the name of Igarashi Dengo. Katsuragi is himself a rather lukewarm lover who is more interested in finding his lost sister than pursuing either geisha. Nevertheless, the opportunistic Okô steals the doctor away from her rival Kiyoha, inciting Dengo's jealousy. When the fish merchant cannot persuade Okô to leave Katsuragi, he vows vengeance. The story ends in fire, bloody murder, and suicide. Dengo stalks Okô but succeeds only in killing her apprentice, Ochise, by mistake; Kiyoha's house goes up in flames (how the fire starts in nver quite explained) while Okô, stricken with remorse, drinks poison. Before she dies, she entrusts the feckless Katsuragi to Kiyoha's care." (Poulton, pp. 37-38)
Hanayagi Shôtarô made his stage debut as Ochise in this production.
