Two views of Hijikata in "Revolt of the Flesh" (5)

At the end of the performance, Hijikata was strung up and transported above the audience via a series of pulleys. This is usually interpreted as a symbolic human sacrifice, but what other allusion to traditional Japanese theater is also being made here?
