Yokoo Tadanori's poster for "Revolt of the Flesh" (1968)
This poster, which incorporates
an image of Hijikata taken in Tohoku by Hosoe Eikô, served a dual purpose,
advertising both an exhibit of Hosoe's photographs and Hijikata's pivotal
dance performance, "Hijikata Tatsumi and the Japanese: Revolt of the
Flesh." Hijikata stamped each silk-screened image with the prints of
his hands dipped in gold ink. See the original photograph below.
This photograph was taken by Hosoe Eikô of Hijikata during a visit back to his birthplace in Tohoku (Northern Japan) in 1965. The result was a group of images of Hijikata dancing and interacting with local people in the farming village where he grew up. The experience of returning to his "roots" had a profound effect on Hijikata and was part of the motivating force for his dance performance "Hijikata Tatsumi and the Japanese: Revolt of the Flesh." The series of photos, entitled "Kamaitachi," was exhibited simultaneously with Hijikata's performance in 1968. See two more photographs from the series below.
