Demon Pond (Yashagaike) by Izumi Kyoka

Performance by Hanagumi Shibai

Before the play begins, the bell is lowered in the center of the circular stage.

When the play starts, the bell is raised, revealing Yuri and Akira underneat. The bell remains hanging above for the rest of the play.

After the bell is raised, Gakuen enters.

After Akira reveals himself to Gakuen, Yuri changes out of her grey wig, and changes her kimono to this.

How does the costuming link Yuri to Yuki, the dragon princess of Demon Pond?

Shirayuki (Yuki) reading her love letter. What has been borrowed from Noh and Kabuki? How does this Yuki seem to parody Kabuki? Compare this version of Yuki to other versions (1979 movie, Miike version, Kabuki version).

One of the minor characters: the Catfish priest. Here he is a combination of the Kabuki catfish priest and western clown. See traditional images of Kabuki catfish priest below.

The "catfish" priest in Kabuki is primarily identified by his long side whiskers that look like catfish whiskers; he frequently twirls them (as above).
