Kagyu (The Snail): Nomura Mansaku playing the yamabushi (mountain priest) in Kagyu. He is apparently very pleased with the results of his trickery. Note the pompoms and cap; these indicate that he is a yamabushi and are also worn by yamabushi appearing in Noh plays like Aoi no Ue. However, the Kyogen yamabushi wears tucked in pants rather than the more refined hakama (split trousers) that a Noh yamabushi would wear. See below for other images of yamabushi.

The actor on the far right is a yamabushi as depicted in Noh. This image is from Funa Benkei (Benkei on a Boat): here the warrior priest Benkei fights the ghost of one of the Heike warriors. The kokata (child actor) in front is playing Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

Yamabushi today, performing austerities in the mountains.
