The death of Michizane's enemy, Fujiwara no Tokihira. When Tokihira fell ill he asked the monk Jozo to come and say prayers on his behalf. Then Jozo's father, Kiyoyuki, who was a scholarly rival of Michizane's, came to visit. Suddenly Michizane's spirit appeared in the form of two green serpents protruding from Tokihira's ears. The serpents demanded that Kiyoyuki tell his son to abandon his incantations. Jozo stopped praying for Tokihira, and he died soon after.

Kiyoyuki contributed to Michizane's exile and subsequent death; his sons Jozo and Nichizo (or Doken) played an important role in deifying Michizane, perhaps because of guilt and fear.
