Act 3 Scene 1, the "Kurumabiki" (Carriage Breaking) scene from Sugawara's Secrets of Calligraphy

The triplets Umeômaru (Ume=plum blossom), Sakuramaru (Sakura=cherry blossom), and Matsuômaro (Matsu=pine tree) are the sons of Michizane's faithful retainer, Shirudayû. Umeômaru, like his father, is a retainer of Michizane. Sakuramaru is the retainer of Prince Tokiyo, the younger brother of Emperor Daigo. Matsuômaru is the retainer of Fujiwara Shihei (the Sino-Japanese reading of Tokihira), the man responsible for Michizane's exile. Here Umeômaru and Sakuramaru face Matsuômaru, accusing him of betraying his allegiance to Michizane. Matsuômaru insists that his first allegiance must be to his master Shihei, and that any enemy of Shihei is now his enemy. In the course of the confrontation, Umeômaru and Sakuramaru attack a closed carriage that Matsuômaru is accompanying. When the carriage is broken apart, the villain Shihei appears, and Umeômaru and Sakuramaru are forced to bow before him in submission, showing their respect for Shihei's elevated status.

This scene is done with "aragoto" (rough style) make-up to exagerate the masculine power of the characters. How do the costumes and makeup indicate which character is which? Who is good and who is bad?
