A scene from the "Hungry Ghost Scroll" (Gaki soshi) dating from the late-12th century. Here Amida Buddha feeds hungry ghosts. Once fed by the deity, and enlightened to the truth of Buddhism, their bodies are returned to normal. The two figures above in the center can easily drink from the river. The figures below on the lower right are still blocked by flames. At the upper-right (partially cut off) we see Buddhist deities coming down to take the newly enlightened souls off to heaven.
