A scene from the "Hungry Ghost Scroll" (Gaki soshi) dating from the late-12th century. Here a female hungry ghost appears to a Buddhist holy man who hears her story and feeds her with an offering of rice (which the ghost can eat because it has been blessed by a Buddhist deity). In the upper left hand scene, he intercedes for her with Amida Buddha, who appears with his two attendant Bodhisattvas, Kannon and Seishi. In this way the holy man is able to gain her release from being a hungry ghost.
