Kanawa (The Iron Crown)
An Edo period image from a Noh play whose plot is similar
to "The Cauldron of Kibutsu." A woman who has been abandoned
by her husband for a new wife, performs black magic to transform herself
into a demon so that she can get revenge upon him. Whereas in "Cauldron"
the man dies, in the Noh play the man is saved by the intervention of a
Buddhist priest. The woman has placed an "iron crown" with three
burning candles on her head as part of the black magic she performs to
become a demon. Here she looks down into the water to see her true self,
transformed into a demon. The detail gives a clearer view of the woman's
reflection.
