Yotsuya Ghost Story: The Transformation Scene
Iemon returns from his visit to Doctor Ito's mansion to find Oiwa horribly disfigured. He takes her robe and the baby's robe to pawn, leaving her in a grey underrobe, and cruelly tears away the mosquito netting, leaving her hands bloody (in script, not always in performance).
Oiwa looks at herself in the mirror, and realizes how disfigure she has become. Here Oiwa looks into a mirror and discovers her horribly changed appearance.
She then decides to comb her hair and blacken her teeth in preparation for her proposed visit to the doctor's mansion to "thank" him for the medicine. Her hair falls out in clumps, and the smeared teeth blackening distorts her mouth.
A different production. Takuetsu, the masseur, attempts to keep Oiwa from leaving by holding her back with a standing screen, but in his horror at her changed appearance he falls back and the screen falls over. Oiwa is holding a shock of her own hair, which has fallen out as she combed it in preparation for her visit to the doctor's. In her increasing fury she unconsciously wrings it and blood drips onto the screen below.
