Taira no Masakado's sister, a sorceress, is about to vanish into thin air. She is lit only by hand-held candles, which create an eery atmosphere of gloom. One explanation for the lack of feet in Edo period ghosts is the use of these candles, which were often held at around waist height to enhance the effect of floating by the ghost or other supernatural being.
