Bunraku Puppet Manipulators

A scene from the Bunraku version of a Noh play, Ominameshi (The Maidenflower)

A young woman who feels she has been betrayed by her lover drowns herself in a river. Here her lifeless body is pulled from the river. Note the puppet manipulators are here are dressed completely in black.

Here the bunraku handler for the head does not wear a hood.

Backstage view of a Bunraku puppet handler waiting to go on. Note the high geta clogs used so that the head manipulator is higher than the handlers of the left arm and feet.
