Zô no Onna: A slightly older woman (in her twenties) as indicated by the thinner face. This mask is considered suitable for female roles which call for elegant refinement. It is used for aristocratic women who have a streak of cruelty, such as Rokujô in Nonomiya, the ghost of Lady Yang Gue Fei in Yokihi, or the aristocratic woman who spurns the love of a lowly worker in The Burden of Love. It is also used for supernatural women such as the Heavenly Maiden in Hagoromo (The Feather Mantle). In the picture to the right below, the Heavenly Maiden, having gotten her feather robe back from the fisherman who took it, wears it as she dances in gratitude. Her heavenly nature is indicated by the elaborate phoenix headress she wears. The woman on the left is the ghost of the Lady Yang Gue Fei (Yokihi in Japanese), gazing at a hair ornament the emperor of China has given her as a memento..
