Course description: This course will use the problem of gender as a lens through which to view Japanese literature and culture. We will attempt to go beyond and behind the usual stereotypical notions of geisha and samurai, to understand how representations of femininity in Japanese literature and drama changed over time in response to specific historical, social, and religious contexts. Note that the class will mainly focus on the premodern period, with some modern towards the end of the course. Readings will include poetry, non-fiction, novels and short stories, film, and drama (Noh, Kyogen, Kabuki, Takarazuka).
