Learning Outcomes for "Gender and Japanese Literature"

By the end of the course you should be able:

1) to identify the problems and issues involved in the study of gender, biological sex, and sexual identity within and across cultures.

2) to have gained the tools to analyze the historical construction of gender, particularly normative notions of femininity and masculinity, in relation to political, economic, and religious changes.

3) to perform a critical analysis (close reading) of a literary and/or performative text in relation to questions of gender and historical context, using the analytic tools provided in the course.
