Basic Requirements:
Evaluation:
CLASS PREPARATION (syllabus): Reading Assignments, Reading Questions, and Images: You should come to class having read the assigned material and tried to answer the reading questions. You are not required to write out the answers to reading questions, they are there to help you focus on important points in the readings. There are images to be viewed on the website for each week. Please come to class having viewed the images and read through the material linked to that class. For example, it will be very helpful to view the images linked to a play that you are reading. Discussion Questions (graded 100 point scale): 1) Do the assigned reading and bring it to discussion section. Also have something to write on! 2) Discussion Questions Zoom: Answer the questions and upload them to the assignments section of the course Canvas site before discussion section. In-person: print out the discussion questions and bring them to class. The answers must be printed to get credit. You can write on your printed version, but you cannot handwrite the entire thing and turn it in for credit. See below for late submissions. FOR DISCUSSION QUESTIONS MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON YOUR ASSIGNMENT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU'VE UPLOADED IT Provide concrete examples and page numbers to support your points. For example if the question asks you to list desirable qualities in a Heian period woman, a list is fine. But you should provide examples to support your points with page numbers, or page numbers with at least a brief identifying tag. And make sure you explain why you've chosen those examples! For example:
Late submissions: since they are meant to facilitate discussion, and you have an unfair advantage if you answer after hearing class discussion, if you turn in Discussion Questions late, you lose one full grade. However, you do not lose more than one grade, so go ahead and turn it in late (it's better than a 0)! If you will not be attending discussion section, you should still upload your discussion questions before section to Assignments on Canvas. Contact Alex via email (asyan2@uci.edu) to explain why you are missing discussion section so your attendance can be adjusted. If you submit after class, please upload to the "Late Assignments" dropbox (you lose one full grade) (DO NOT SEND ME OR ALEX THE QUESTIONS BY EMAIL). Make sure you indicate your name, week of discussion, date etc. at the top of the assignment/discussion questions! Class Outlines: You should come to each class having printed out the class outline (click on that day, for example, “week 1a outline”). Some outlines will be used for more than one class. Bringing the reading is a good idea as well. WRITING ASSIGNMENTS See info here. Make sure you follow guidelines!
