CLASS PREPARATION (syllabus):

Reading Assignments, Reading Questions, and Images:

You should come to class having read the assigned material and tried to do the reading questions. (Note that reading and discussion questions are used to create the exams.) You are not required to write out the answers to reading questions, they are there to help you focus on important points in the readings.

There are images to be viewed on the website for each week. Please come to class having viewed the images and read through the material linked to that class. For example, it will be very helpful to view the images linked to a play that you are reading.

Class Outlines:

You should come to each class having printed out the class outline (click on that day, for example, “week 1a outline”). Some outlines will be used for more than one class. Bringing the reading is a good idea as well.

CLASS WORK(syllabus):

Discussion Questions:

Most weeks at least part of one class will be devoted to class discussion. For that class:

1) bring the assigned reading to class

2) answer the discussion questions assigned for that week (scroll down to find them below outlines; they will also be on the reading questions page). Your answers should be typed (limited to one page single-spaced, total).

The answers do not need to be written out in complete sentences but are notes for your use in class discussion. For example if the question asks you to list the differences between two versions of the same story, a list is fine. If the question asks you to give examples to support your points, page numbers with a brief identifying tag are fine. An example:

What are the main differences between the Noh play Aoi no Ue and the original story in The Tale of Genji?

1. Are the priests and their exorcism rituals succesful?

Genji: No, Rokujo is not identified or pacified and Aoi no Ue dies (p. XX)

Aoi no ue: Yes, Rokujo is identified and pacified and Aoi no Ue lives (p. YY)

Discussion question grading (20% of grade = 20 points):
The discussion questions are collected at the end of the discussion class

They will be graded:

U-unsatisfactory or late (1 pt)
S-satisfactory (2 pts)
O-outstanding (2 pts + .5 pt extra credit).

There will be no written comments. Since they are meant to facilitate discussion, THEY CANNOT BE TURNED IN LATE FOR FULL CREDIT.

Exams

Both the midterm and final exams will be in-class. Some part of the midterm may be take-home.
