Examples of bibliographical entries for encyclopedias and other reference works

If the reference work is alphabetical, you don't need to provide volume or page numbers.

1. Encyclopedia articles with no author are cited as in this example (MLA style):

"Ideology." The American Heritage Dictionary. 3rd ed. 1997. Print.

2. Encyclopedia articles with authors are cited more like books (MLA style):

Clements, Jonathan and Helen McCarthey. “World Masterpiece Theater.” In The Anime Encyclopedia, 3rd Revised Edition: A Century of Japanese Animation. Berkley, CA: Stone Bridge Press, 2006. Print.

3. Encyclopedia articles with authors other than the editors are cited like this (MLA style):

Iezzi, Julie A. "Noh-Kyogen." In Encyclopedia of Modern Asia. Eds. Karen Christensen and David Levinson. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 2002. Print.

Note that some reference works that were originally print volumes are now available online through the library. If you accessed online, provide the name of the online source and date of accession as follows:
