NorthWestward Ho!:

Hank and Barbara
(finally) visit
Eugene, Oregon

3-5 September 2005

Saturday, September 3

La Rosa picked us up at the Eugene Airport and immediately took us to the Eugene Saturday Market.  Woohooooo!!....

Great arts, crafts, food, and live music.  Not to mention more tie-dye t-shirts than we had seen since 1968.

Then it was home, to relax....

with Holly...

and La Rosa...

while the colors ran riot in their living room!!

Sunday, September 4

After a yummy bagel breakfast, a tour of La Rosa's woodshop, and a fluky problem getting the car rolling, we all headed off for the coast.

We stopped at Heceta Head Lighthouse and took a short hike down to the rocks at Devil's Churn. We even saw several "resident" gray whales off the shore in Yachats (trust me, there IS a spout somewhere in the photo above). But the most spectacular thing we did was explore a huge and magnificent secret stretch of tide pools north of Yachats.

La Rosa, Holly and Barb among the tide pools.

There were colorful starfish, mussels, barnacles and anemones everywhere you looked....

...and stranded seaweed nestled in the rocks.

What a great way to start the trip! We stopped for dinner in Florence on the way home. While we were trying to decide where to eat, a satisfied-looking patron walked out of Traveler's Cove (1362 Bay Street), the apparent source of the mesmerising musical sounds that filled the entire block. So we asked him how he liked it. He said, "The food was good, but the saxophone player's the best in the world." When we left, we had to agree, except we thought the food was terrific, too!

on to Corvallis...
