NorthWestward Ho!:

Hank and Barbara
(finally) visit
Glide, Oregon

12-13 September 2005

Monday, September 12

We got up before the sun had risen above the crater's rim. The sky was beautiful....

...but it wasn't long before the sun made its grand entrance....

Throughout our stay at Crater Lake, we had several close (and amusing) encounters with fearless (and ubiquitous) denizens of the park: golden-mantled ground squirrels...

It was difficult to tell who was more curious about whom!

"Who you callin' a chipmunk, you big ape..."

Before we left Crater Lake, we stopped by the Visitor Center and asked Mr. Chippy if he would care to join us on the rest of our journey. He was delighted by our invitation and even offered to help navigate.

And so we bid adieu to Crater Lake....

We headed toward Glide, via Rte. 138, a scenic drive with beautiful lakes and waterfalls located every few miles along the way.

Our first stop was Lemolo Lake.

A near-perfect reflection of Mt. Thielsen on the surface of Lemolo Lake.

It was a little challenging to find the trail to Lemolo Falls, but we eventually located the series of landmarks described in our Lonely Planet guide and got on our way. We found all sorts of interesting and beautiful things along the trail...

...an unusual tangled root system of a fallen tree...

...and a stunning tree fungus...

...but only the barest glimpse of Lemolo Falls which we could hear roaring in the canyon far below. Maybe the guide book underestimated the hiking distance to the falls, or maybe the surrounding forest had simply grown in over the years and now obscured what once had been a good view, or maybe we just gave up too soon. Oh well.... We retraced our steps and headed for Toketee Falls, which did not disappoint!

The trail followed the racing white water of the North Umpqua River...

...which was so clear you could see right through it as it cascaded over sudden drops...

...including the tiered 28- and 85-foot drops of the wonderful Toketee Falls.

There was a lot to see along Rte. 138 and we stopped a couple more times before arriving at the Steelhead Run B&B in Glide. Fortunately, we had plenty of daylight left to explore the grounds before heading down the road to Munchies for dinner.

The North Umpqua River seen from the Steelhead's deck...

...and from the rocky shore below.

on to Klamath ...
