ONE SHORT PAPER: (3-4 pages) on critical materials

DRAFT OF COURSE PAPER: This draft should be as complete as you can make it, but you should not be afraid to experiment, take risks. You are welcome to identify problem spots and ask for advice in your draft. Each student will have 2 peer readers.

REVISION OF COURSE PAPER: 12-15 pages (If you plan to use this paper as a writing sample, you may want to extend it, either for the course or a later point). In addition to the course paper, you will need to turn in a commentary.

Commentary: Please write a 1-2 page commentary on the writing of your paper. How did things go? What sort of trouble spots did you run into? How did you handle them? What did you learn--from handling trouble spots and from having your paper read by a peer reader? Did anything about your thinking surprise you?
The commentary is informal and will not be graded, but it is required.

  WHAT COUNTS WHAT?

Attendance is simply required. If you miss more than 2 class sessions, your grade will go dow

Participation: 15 %

Short paper: 15%

Draft of course paper: 15%

Course Paper, including peer commentary: 55%

  ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic Honesty: I begin with the view that you are trustworthy, and in fact that your own interest in this material would put academic dishonesty completely off your mental map. Your final paper should include a "Works Cited" page listing all secondary sources used in writing your paper. In addition, if someone in class has been particularly helpful to you in your thinking about Austen, give that person credit in a note. All such notes will count toward your participation grade and that of the person acknowledged.
All students are responsible for reading the UCI Academic Honesty Policy (click here).
